Major League Soccer (algemeen bekend als MLS) is de hoogste vorm van professioneel mannenvoetbal in de Verenigde Staten en Canada. De competitie werd opgericht in 1993 en ging van start in 1996.
De Liga wordt beheerd door de Voetbal Federatie (USSF) van de Verenigde Staten en in tegenstelling tot andere voetbalcompetities in Europa en elders, hanteert het geen degradatie-promotiesysteem. In plaats daarvan, sterk gelijkend op andere grote Amerikaanse sportcompetities zoals de NBA, NFL, MLB en NHL, worden alle teams, ongeacht waar ze in de ranglijst eindigen, het volgende seizoen niet gedegradeerd naar een lagere competitie.
MLS is opgesplitst in twee conferenties - de Eastern en de Western Conference. Teams spelen zowel tegen elkaar binnen hun eigen conferentie als tegen teams van de tegenovergestelde conferentie. Het seizoen begint doorgaans eind februari tot begin maart en eindigt in oktober. Het team met de beste prestaties over het gehele reguliere seizoen wint het Supporters' Shield.
Na het reguliere seizoen vinden de jaarlijkse MLS Cup play-offs plaats tussen oktober en november. Deze omvatten de beste teams uit zowel de Oostelijke als de Westelijke Conferentie. Het team dat dit naseizoenstoernooi wint, verwerft de MLS Cup.
Door de jaren heen is de MLS een populaire bestemming geworden voor veel spelers van over de hele wereld die hun carrière langzaam zien afbouwen. Onlangs hebben we grootheden als Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gareth Bale en Lionel Messi gezien, die allen Europese clubs hebben verlaten om in de MLS te spelen.
In 2023 sloot Apple een baanbrekende tienjarige overeenkomst om de wereldwijde uitzendpartner te worden van Major League Soccer, waarbij ze hoogwaardige live-streaming en OTT-toegang tot alle wedstrijden aanbieden op Apple-apparaten en aangesloten platforms. Deze samenwerking stimuleert niet alleen de sportportfolio van Apple, maar biedt MLS ook een strategisch raamwerk om het merk MLS wereldwijd te versterken.
