De Schotse Professional Football League is de vooraanstaande professionele voetbalcompetitie in Schotland. Deze competitie ontstond in 2013 door een fusie tussen de Scottish Premier League en de Scottish Football League en bevindt zich aan de top van de piramide in het Schotse voetbalsysteem.
Deze competitie is de thuishaven van een van de meest intense rivaliteiten in het voetbal: de confrontatie tussen Celtic en Rangers. De 'Old Firm Derby' is een van de meest geanticipeerde wedstrijden voor fans wereldwijd, die zich soms niet bewust zijn van de ideologieën die aan de basis liggen van deze vurige strijd.
Het competitieformaat is uniek in Europa vanwege het kleine aantal deelnemende teams, maar het hanteert nog steeds een promotie- en degradatiesysteem. Twaalf teams nemen deel aan de Schotse topcompetitie en spelen minstens drie keer tegen elkaar in een soort reguliere competitie. Zodra er drie onderlinge ontmoetingen zijn geweest, wordt de competitie opgesplitst in twee groepen van zes: één groep strijdt voor de titel en kwalificatie voor Europese wedstrijden, terwijl de andere zes proberen de degradatie play-offs en uiteindelijke degradatie naar het Schotse kampioenschap te vermijden.
Het team met het minste aantal punten na 38 wedstrijden degradeert naar het Schotse Championship, terwijl het team dat voorlaatste eindigt, deelneemt aan de promotie-/degradatie-play-offs. Aan de bovenkant van de ranglijst wint het team met de meeste punten na 38 wedstrijden de titel, terwijl de overige vijf plaatsen voor de Europese competities worden verdeeld tussen de teams in de kampioenschaps-play-offs.
Zoals eerder aangegeven, is de 'Old Firm Derby' een van de meest interessante voetbalwedstrijden wereldwijd en heeft het de aandacht getrokken van televisie- en streamingbedrijven uit diverse landen. In de Verenigde Staten kunnen fans de Schotse Premiership volgen via CBS Sports Network en Paramount+. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk worden geselecteerde wedstrijden van deze competitie uitgezonden op Sky Sports. Bovendien bieden sommige club-tv-kanalen fans de mogelijkheid om hun favoriete Schotse clubs te volgen.
