Primera División History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
De Primera Liga van Nicaragua vertegenwoordigt de hoogste voetbalcompetitie in het land. Opgericht in 1933, wordt deze competitie georganiseerd door de Nicaraguaanse voetbalfederatie.
Het competitieformat bestaat uit twee toernooien die tijdens een regulier seizoen worden gespeeld. Het eerste toernooi loopt van augustus tot november en staat bekend als het 'Torneo de Apertura', terwijl het tweede toernooi 'Torneo de Clausura' heet en plaatsvindt van januari tot mei. Na elk regulier seizoen volgt een finalefase waarin de top vier teams doorgaan naar de halve finale. Beide wedstrijden worden gespeeld op basis van thuis- en uitwedstrijden, waarbij de teams met de beste prestaties het terugspel organiseren. De winnaar van de competitie wordt bepaald via een finale met twee wedstrijden, waarbij eventuele gelijke standen worden beslist door een verlenging en strafschoppen.
De competitie bestaat uit tien teams en maakt gebruik van een promotie- en degradatiesysteem. In het degradatieproces wordt het team met de minste punten over het gehele seizoen (zowel Apertura als Clausura) automatisch gedegradeerd naar de Segunda División. Een extra degradatieplek wordt bepaald door een wedstrijd tussen het negende team van deze competitie en de nummer twee van de Segunda División.
De berichtgeving van deze competitie wordt voornamelijk uitgezonden door het lokale netwerk, Kanaal 6, dat tot 2025 een beperkt aantal wedstrijden per week live zal uitzenden. Daarnaast kunnen wedstrijden ook live worden gestreamd of op aanvraag worden bekeken via het officiële YouTube-kanaal van de competitie.
