The 2023-24 UEFA Europa League final is — finally! — here as Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen prepare to face off this Wednesday is the decisive fixture. All eyes will be on the Aviva Stadium in Dublin as both finalists seek to make history in this highly-anticipated showdown.

While both sides stand a good chance of lifting the title in a 90-minute knockout match, the favorites are undeniably Bayer Leverkusen. Xabi Alonso's men have taken the 2023-24 season by storm, winning the Bundesliga in spectacular fashion and ending Bayern Munich's 11-year grip over German top-flight football.

Not only did Die Werkself hit the 90-point threshold en route to lifting the Meisterschale, finishing 17 points second-placed Stuttgart, but Wirtz and Co. also went the entire season unbeaten, confirming themselves as Germany's first Invincibles.

Their 2-1 victory over Augsburg on Saturday in the final round meant they finished the campaign with 28 wins, six draws, and zero defeats, a feat no other Bundesliga side managed in history.

And that's not all as the German club are undefeated across all competitions this term. With Leverkusen through to both the UEFA Europa League final and the DFB Pokal final, Alonso's men have the opportunity to win the treble without losing a single game all season.

Die Werkself, who will face 2. Bundesliga side FC Kaiserslautern in the DFB Pokal, are thus 180 minutes away from achieving a historic treble-winning Invincibles. Atalanta are their first hurdle but fortunately for the Bundesliga champions, they enter this tie with confidence.

Leverkusen did draw three matches in a row immediately after being crowned Germany champions. However, Wirtz and Co. have won all but one of their last five fixtures, with that sole slip-up being the spectacular 2-2 comeback against Roma in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League semifinal tie.

Their unbeaten run was tested in the Europa League quarterfinals, with West Ham putting the Germans under tremendous pressure in the second leg. However, Leverkusen persevered, as they did against Qarabag in the round before that and Roma in the following stage. The question is whether they can beat Atalanta in the ultimate game.

Atalanta, meanwhile, are seeking history for themselves. Never before have this Italian side won a European trophy. In fact, this will be their first-ever appearance in a European final.

And La Dea's road to Dublin was not easy. While Gian Piero Gasperini's side had to overcome Marseille in the semifinal, it was their showdown with Liverpool in the quarterfinals that will never be forgotten.

The Merseyside giants had crashed out of the FA Cup a while before the first leg of this Europa League quarterfinal but Klopp's men were still on track for a treble. However, Scamacca and Co. all but ended Liverpool's dreams in the first leg, achieving a historic 3-0 victory at the iconic Anfield.

Scamacca grabbed a brace while Mario Pašalić scored Atalanta's third to all but secure progression to the semifinals at the expense of a European powerhouse. Gasperini's men lost the reverse fixture at Stadio di Bergamo by only by a 1-0 scoreline, which ultimately proved worthless.

Against Marseille, the Serie A outfit drew 1-1 in the first leg at the Stade Vélodrome before dispatching them with ease at home, beating the Ligue 1 outfit 3-0. Ademola Lookman, who could be one of the key men in the final, broke the deadlock in that game and will be hoping to lead his side to glory in the final.

Unfortunately, Atalanta head into this tie on the back of recent heartbreak, having lost the Coppa Italia final to Juventus roughly a week ago. However, Lookman and Co. have been in fantastic form lately, winning all but four of their last 12 matches across all competitions.

This form has all but guaranteed UEFA Champions League qualification for the club — they need only one point from their final two Serie A fixtures to secure a ticket. However, Gasperini will want to end the season with silverware, and beating Leverkusen in the UEFA Europa League final would be the perfect manner to wrap up 2023-24.

Team news

Atalanta: Emil Holm will sadly miss the final due to a calf injury, thus joining Marten De Roon (thigh injury) on the sidelines. Meanwhile, Rafael Toloi and Sead Kolasinac are both doubts.

Leverkusen: Xabi Alonso, on the other hand, has no concerns. Florian Wirtz, who has been dealing with a thigh issue, is fit for this clash. Piero Hincapie and Granit Xhaka will return to the lineup after getting rested over the weekend while Patrick Shick will face an uphill battle to dethrone Victor Boniface in attack.

Key stats:

  • This will be the third meeting between these two clubs.

  • Atalanta currently boast a perfect record against Bayer Leverkusen, winning both previous encounters with the German champions.

  • That run-in came in the 2021-22 UEFA Europa League round of 16, with La Dea winning both home and away.

  • The last time a German and Italian club met in the UEFA Europa League final was back in 1997 when Schalke beat Inter Milan to lift the title.

  • No Italian club has won the UEFA Europa League since Parma in 1999.

  • Xabi Alonso's men are unbeaten in 51 games across all competitions (W42, D9).

  • Atalanta have made it to three finals under Gasperini but have lost on all occasions.

  • No team has scored more goals in this season's UEFA Europa League than Leverkusen (31).
