About Bulgarian Supercup
Bulgarian Supercup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Bulgarian Supercup is an annual, one-off match featuring the winners of the Parva Liga (first league) and the Bulgarian Cup. It was initially founded in 1989 but was suspended due to political issues in Bulgaria and elsewhere in Eastern Europe. However, the tournament was reinstated in 2004 and since then, has been held each year usually during the weekend before the start of the upcoming season.
In the event that the same team wins both the Parva Liga and the Bulgarian Cup, then the match is contested between that team and the runners-up in the Bulgarian Cup. To date, Ludogorets Razgrad, CSKA Sofia and Levski Sofia are among the most successful teams in Bulgarian Supercup history.
Various providers (both state owned and private) have held media broadcast rights to the Bulgarian Supercup over the past few decades. During the 1990s and through the early part of the 21st century, TV broadcasts were carried by state provider Bulgarian National Television (BNT), before Nova Broadcasting Group acquired TV rights and held them until the early part of the 2020s, when BNT reacquired TV and live-streaming rights in a multi-year deal.
