Preview

O Clássico is finally back. For the second time this season, Portuguese powerhouses Porto and Benfica face off this Sunday in a highly-anticipated Estádio do Dragão clash, with both teams fighting for their lives in what has been a thrilling title race.

Both sides must win this fixture but for different reasons. For Porto, the explanation is obvious: the Dragons are nine points behind Benfica, the current leaders, and a defeat would all but end their title aspirations.

While a draw would prevent that nine-point gap from increasing, not even a stalemate would suffice for the hosts as Benfica are not the only Lisbon giants Porto must worry over. Sporting CP sit seven points ahead, meaning the Lions are only two points adrift of the league leaders while having a game in hand over both teams.

Fortunately for Sérgio Conceição's men, they have regained form following a slight blip in early February, winning three out of their last four games following a two-game winless run roughly a month ago. This includes the brilliant 1-0 victory over Premier League giants Arsenal in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 fixture.

The second leg of this European tie will be on the manager's mind but for now, all focus should go to Benfica. Porto have lost their last two encounters with their bitter rivals and were beaten 1-0 the last time they hosted the Eagles in the league. Does a similar fate await the Primeira Liga's second-most successful team in history?

The visitors will look to make this happen as Benfica must also be wary of Sporting CP. Their Lisbon rivals take to the pitch on Sunday but host mid-table side Farense a few hours earlier and are expected to win.

This means the Eagles might drop to second in the table by the time O Clássico kicks off. A defeat at Porto would thus leave them a point behind their neighbors despite playing a game extra, hence the importance of winning this derby.

Unfortunately, Roger Schmidt's side enter this game on the back of a disappointing loss against the aforementioned Lisbon rivals. The reigning Primeira Liga champions visited Ruben Amorim's side on Thursday for the first leg of the Taca de Portugal semifinal but were beaten 2-1.

This is the second time in their last three matches that Benfica have failed to win, drawing nil-nil with Toulouse prior to their 4-0 win over Portimonense last weekend. However, that draw took place in the UEFA Europa League after Rafa Silva and Co. had won the first leg 2-0.

The visitors boast a superior head-to-head record against Sporting CP in the league, which means Benfica will reclaim the top spot even if they draw while the Lions win their match earlier in the day. However, their Lisbon rivals boast a game in hand, which makes this upcoming showdown all the more interesting.

Team news

Porto: Zaidu Sanusi and Ivan Marcano are both unavailable due to long-term ACL injuries. Additionally, Mehdi Taremi remains a doubt and might not be risked given Evanilson's form in front of goal. Meanwhile, Galeno and Nico Gonzalez are expected to join the Brazilian in attack.

Benfica: Juan Bernat is unavailable for this clash but is the visitors' only absentee. Florentino Luis will be hoping for a start in this game but otherwise, the Eagles are not expected to make several changes.
