The Spanish midfielder has confirmed his imminent departure from Manchester United but failed to make the squad list for the last game of the season.

Manchester United fans took to social media to criticize the club's head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for omitting Ander Herrera from the squad that will face Cardiff City at Old Trafford on Sunday. Although the absence of the 29-year-old Spanish midfielder does not overly indicate that he will miss the final Premier League game, it is looking more likely that he will be denied a proper farewell match after announcing his decision to leave the Red Devils.

Ander Herrera joined the 20-time English champions from Athletic Club in a deal worth 36 million euros in 2014. However, despite showing glimpses of potentially becoming a star name at the club, the Spanish midfielder failed to cement a place in the starting eleven over the years.

The arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United in December 2018 brought about a renaissance in Herrera's form but the player's inability to agree to the terms in a new contract has facilitated his depart as a free agent this summer.

With Manchester United confirming the player's decision to leave with the release of a short documentary on Saturday afternoon, fans anticipated a befitting farewell for Herrera at Old Trafford. Nonetheless, a final appearance for the Reds' No. 21 is apparently off the table for as he was not spotted among the players that entered the team hotel.

Instead, Solskjaer has named a 20-man squad for the Cardiff encounter featuring a host of youngsters from the academy while club captain Antonio Valencia was also in the ranks as he looks to feature in his final game to commiserate a 10-year spell with the Red Devils.

Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw were also not spotted at the team hotel whereas Eric Bailly, Alexis Sanchez, and Romelu Lukaku have all been ruled out with injuries.
