The FIFA Ballon d’Or 2010 award can go to either Xavi or Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi believes. Each of these tree Barcelona players is in contention to win the first newly-named edition of the award.
Answering to RTVE’s question concerning the prospect of losing his title as the world’s best footballer, Lionel Messi stated:

“The FIFA Ballon d’Or? Well, I think that Xavi and Iniesta deserve it. And, if they win, then I’ll be equally happy.”

Lionel Messi achieved the same things as Xavi and Iniesta last season in terms of club football trophies. However, the multitude of goals he scored for Barcelona and his consistent amazing displays have let him become many people’s choice. But, his failure to lead Argentina to World Cup glory has somewhat dented his chances of retaining his title as the world’s best.

Lionel Messi suffered a 4-0 defeat with Argentina against Germany in the quarter-finals of South Africa 2010. Meanwhile, Xavi and Iniesta reached the skies by helping Spain clinch their first ever World Cup trophy.
