The Real Madrid ace boasts a fan base of 107 million followers. Messi, meanwhile, is nowhere to be found.

It's official. The title of Facebook's most popular figure has a new master and it is Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese ace surpassed singing sensation Shakira for the most likes on Facebook, having reached a fan base of a whopping 107 million followers and counting, 5 thousand more than the Colombian superstar.

This will only go further to cement the three-time Ballon d'Or winner's popularity in football. Already a likable figure on social media, he boasts a huge advantage over La Liga rival Lionel Messi.

The Barcelona striker is 28.2 million likes behind the Blancos ace, with 78.8 million followers. La Pulga is followed by David Beckham at 52.1 million likes, Neymar at 51.9 million likes, and Kaka at 32.7 million likes.

Ronaldinho (31m), Mesut Ozil (28m), and Andres Iniesta (24m) complete the list of football players on the top 10 most popular people on Facebook list.

On Twitter, it is once again Ronaldo who rules, reigning above the aforementioned high profile names of the beautiful game. The former Manchester United winger boasts a followers count of 34 million.

No athlete ranks above Cristiano. Second to the Merengues ace is Kaka with 22.3 million followers. Messi, of course, has no official Twitter account and thus is not included.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid, Liverpool, UEFA Champions League

This is a much welcomed positive for Ronaldo and may boost his morale in what has been a horredous past few weeks for the Liga BBVA attacker. A goalscoring menance, his form has taken a huge dip since the turn of the new year, and after last Tuesday's loss to Schalke, he has gone on a media black-out.

Could this latest feat prove to be a catalyst in Ronaldo's return to form?
