About League Cup
League Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Cymru League Cup (Welsh League Cup) is a cup competition for Welsh clubs organized by the Football Association of Wales. It was founded in 1992 and is widely regarded as the second-most premier competition in Welsh football after the Welsh Cup, which was founded in 1877.
Unlike the Welsh Club, which is open to a wider range of clubs, the Welsh League Cup is only open to teams competing in the upper two levels of the Welsh football pyramid - namely the Cymru Premier, the Cymru North, and the Cymru South. A handful of lower-tier teams are also eligible via wildcard entries. To date, the most successful team in the Welsh League Cup is New Saints, who has won more cups than any other side. Other teams who have done well in this competition include Connah's Quay Nomads and Barry Town.
The Welsh League Cup has been covered by various entities over the decades. From the mid 1990s through the 2000s, matches were broadcast by S4C, a Welsh-language TV channel, before BBC Cymru Wales acquired TV broadcast rights for the rest of that decade and through most of the 2010s. Later on in the 2010s, BBC Cymru Wales and S4C shared TV and live-streaming rights for matches in the competition, but in 2023, neither opted to renew their deal to cover the competition.
