Channel 5 history, coverage, features
Five is a free-to-air television channel in the United Kingdom that was originally launched in 1997. At the time, it became the fifth national terrestrial television station in the UK. Over the years, the channel has gone back and forth between names. It was launched as ‘Channel Five’, but in 2022, it became known as ‘Five’. In 2011, it went back to being known as ‘Channel Five’, but it once again became ‘Five’ in 2025. Five’s programming mainly focuses on drama, entertainment, news and talk shows. However, live sport has also featured on the channel from time to time.In the past, Five has had the live broadcast rights to the UEFA Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup. A weekly EFL highlights has also previously been housed on Five. Five streaming is available through My5. This streaming platform provides users with a live feed of Five programming and the option to catch up on previous programming on demand. It can be downloaded as an app on iOS and Android devices. All content on Five is in English.
