About League Cup
League Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The League or Ireland Cup, also known simply as League Cup, is a club football competition played yearly in the European country. The tournament was first held in the 1973-74 season, and it has been played by both professional and amateur clubs in the country with different formats, although the latest change came in 2005, when it became a KO competition.
The League of Ireland Cup is considered the third most-relevant competition in Ireland behind the Premier Division and the FAI Cup. The tournament is played under a single-game format for all ties, with penalties being used to determine the winners in the event of a draw.
Over the years, fourteen teams have been able to claim the title in this competition. Derry City are the most successful team in this tournament, having won the trophy eleven times.
The tournament was played without any interruption from 1973 to 2019. The effects of the COVID-19 outbreak forced the competition to be suspended until further notice.
