About Scottish Premiership

Scottish Premiership History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Scottish Professional Football League is Scotland’s top professional football competition. This competition was formed as a merger of the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League in 2013 and sits at the top of the pyramid of the Scottish football system.

This league is home to one of the fiercest rivalries in football: Celtic vs Rangers. The “Old Firm Derby” is one of the most anticipated games for fans around the world, who sometimes don’t realize the ideologies behind this heated rivalry.

The league’s format is unique in Europe due to the small number of teams in it, but it still operates under a promotion-relegation system. Twelve teams play in the Scottish top-flight, getting to face each other at least three times in a sort of regular season. Once there have been three meetings between them, the league is divided into two groups of six, one battling for the title and access to European competitions, and the other six trying to avoid the relegation playoffs and eventual relegation to the Scottish Championship.

The team with the fewest points after 38 games gets relegated to the Scottish Championship, while the team with the second lowest number of points enters a promotion playoff. On the other end of the standings, the team with the most points after 38 games wins the title, while spots for European competitions are allocated between the other five teams in the Championship playoff.

As mentioned before, the Old Firm Derby is one of the most attractive football games to watch around the world, which has gathered interest from TV and streaming companies from different countries. In the United States, watching the Scottish Premiership is possible via CBS Sports Network and Paramount+. In the UK, select games for this league are aired on Sky Sports. Added to those options, club TV channels may also be available for fans to watch their favorite Scottish clubs.
