Brasileirão History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
Het Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, beter bekend als de Brasileirão, is de hoogste professionele voetbalcompetitie in Brazilië. Opgericht in 1971, heeft de Brasileirão gediend als broedplaats voor enkele van de meest getalenteerde voetballers in de geschiedenis, met inbegrip van vooraanstaande namen zoals Pelé, Zico, Romário, Ronaldo, Kaka, en meer recentelijk, Neymar en Vinícius Júnior.
De competitie omvat 20 clubs die elk seizoen strijden in een round-robin-formaat, waarbij ze tweemaal spelen, zowel thuis als uit. Bovendien functioneert de Braziliaanse topvlucht volgens een promotie- en degradatiesysteem. De vier laagst geklasseerde teams degraderen elk seizoen naar Serie B, terwijl de best presterende teams het recht verdienen om deel te nemen aan prestigieuze internationale competities, zoals de Copa Libertadores.
De Brasileirão heeft enkele iconische clubs voortgebracht, waaronder Flamengo, São Paulo FC, Santos en Palmeiras, die de competitie kort na de oprichting begonnen te domineren. Aanvankelijk waren, vanwege historische omstandigheden en de immense geografische uitgestrektheid van Brazilië, de belangrijkste competities de staatskampioenschappen in elke Braziliaanse staat.
Het Torneio dos Campeões uit 1937 markeerde het eerste nationale toernooi met volledig professionele voetbalclubs in Brazilië, met clubs die kampioen waren in elke staat. In augustus 2023 erkende de Braziliaanse voetbalconfederatie (CBF) dit toernooi officieel als een Braziliaans kampioenschap, waardoor Atlético Mineiro de inaugurele nationale kampioenen van Brazilië werd. In 1959 gaf de behoefte aan een Braziliaanse vertegenwoordiger in de Copa Libertadores aanleiding tot de Taça Brasil, een landelijke competitie. Pas in 1971 werd de eerste competitie uitdrukkelijk aangeduid als een nationaal kampioenschap, dat werd gewonnen door Atlético Mineiro, voordat het in 1989 officieel "Campeonato Brasileiro" werd genoemd.
Hoewel de Braziliaanse topcompetitie wordt erkend als een van de meest vooraanstaande voetbalcompetities op wereldniveau, heeft het moeilijkheden ondervonden om een vergelijkbaar bereik te krijgen in de Verenigde Staten en Britse markten in vergelijking met de Europese competities. Desalniettemin heeft de Campeonato Brasileiro Série A de aandacht getrokken van enkele van 's werelds grootste omroepen, waaronder BT Sports, Dazn en Premier Sports in het Verenigd Koninkrijk; en beIN Sports in de Verenigde Staten.
Het jaar 2021 markeerde de toetreding van een aantal prominente omroepen tot het speelveld. Onder hen waren CBS Sports, die de Brasileiro-wedstrijden live begon te streamen voor fans in de VS via Paramount+, na het verwerven van de uitzendrechten voor de periode 2021-2023. TelevisaUnivision verwierf ook de uitzendrechten voor de jaren 2021 tot 2023, terwijl ze zich aansloten bij Fanatiz USA (met uitzendrechten van 2021 tot 2024) in het aanbieden van Spaanstalige verslaggeving.
