About Swiss Challenge League

Swiss Challenge League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Swiss Challenge League, also known as the Brack.ch Challenge League, is the first division football league in Switzerland. It was founded in 1898 and, prior to assuming its current name, was known as the Swiss Serie B and the Nationalliga B, respectively. The Switzerland Football Association oversees the Swiss Challenge League.

Ten (10) teams, often including clubs from Liechtenstein, participate in the Swiss Challenge League. The teams play each other four times in a season, amounting to 36 games in total. Eighteen (18) games are played in the first and second rounds and another 18 in the third and fourth rounds. A win attracts a point, and a point is awarded for a draw.

At the end of a season, the team with the most point on the league table is crowned champions. The club is automatically promoted to the Swiss Super League. The team that finishes second features in a promotion and relegation play-off with the ninth-placed team of the Super League. Clubs that finish between third and ninth in the Challenge League qualify to play in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.

Relatively, the lowest-ranked team in the Swiss Challenge League is relegated to the Swiss Promotion League. The champions of the Promotion League subsequently replace the side.

Clubs in the Swiss Challenge League are eligible to play in the Swiss Cup.
